The Origin of Father’s Day

The Origin of Father's Day ~ Found on ScrutinizingLife.com

Did you know Father’s Day wasn’t a national holiday until 1972?  According to History.com, a church in West Virginia sponsored the nation’s first event to honor fathers. On July 5, 1908 in this church, the Sunday sermon honored the memory of 362 men who had died in an explosion at the Fairmont Coal Company mines.  It was a one time event and did not become a holiday.

Pot Up A Pincushion | www.ScrutinizingLife.com | Perfect Teacher's Gift, Mother's Day Gift, Crafter's Gift

Pot Up A Pincushion

This adorable pincushion flower-pot would make a much appreciated Teacher’s Gift to some lucky teacher!  Or maybe it would be the perfect child’s gift to give to a loving Aunt or Nana.  Who ever you decide to make this for I’m sure they will love it!  It’s pretty and practical!

To give the pot its mossy look you will sponge-paint coordinating colors of green. Brown velvet (or whatever material you prefer) is used for the “dirt” cushion cover and pretty ribbon roses adorn the top. This gift is super easy to make and, if you are a crafter/sewer, you probably have many of the items already on hand.

23+ Mother’s Day Gifts Mom Would Love To Receive

Mother’s Day is next Sunday, May 10th. Are you stuck for ideas on what to give that special Mom in your life?

As a mother of 3 adult children, I have received quite a few Mother’s Day gifts over the years.  My children are all very artistic/creative and while growing up they always made me cards which were usually accompanied by a lilac bush {THE best flowering shrub out there!!}.   Periodically, when I take out my memory box that holds all these masterpieces, I think back to the ages of my children when they made every card and remember how important my role as a mother has been to them.  Those are very precious memories and I will cherish those cards forever.

Now that my children are older, they are always asking for ideas of what they can buy me for Mother’s Day.  I’ve tried suggesting they make me a card like when they were little, but that didn’t go over so well!  I guess the days of homemade cards are gone forever!

At the request of my children for gift giving ideas, I have picked out a few gifts that I would love to receive.  Next time when they ask me what I would like,  all I have to do is

For today’s Mother’s Day inspired blog hop I have selected one of my favorite DIY Wreaths. The “cut the squares with pinking shears” wreath my sister and I used to make years ago…. for every holiday imaginable I might add!  It had been so long since I made one {20+ years!} I had to find out the details for the supplies from her!  It is very easy to make and so pretty when finished.
